I heard something quite interesting in bible study last night. The pastor said something like this: if you have to make a choice between God and your boyfriend, or God and food, or God and money or job or career or the way you dress. You have made that other choice an idol. God should always have your first vote. By making your choices a toss up between God and the other thing, you have placed that thing on the same plain as God. Hence, you'd be idolizing the thing.

So I started thinking about this word, renounce and what it really means to renounce. Before last night, the word simply meant repentance in my eyes, but It is far more than that. When I think of it in reference to last night, the word actually says: "Jesus I dethrone everything else and make you Lord over my life." This word is saying, "I deny every other idol/god in my life and I acknowledge you as Sovereign." Renunciation is like switching your alliance. Giving up your affection of the past things which held you back in exchange for life and life abundance.
So as you journey through life and the Holy Spirit brings things to your attention, be sure to make up within your mind when you pray. And pray with a firm conviction. Otherwise, seek God in the word and then make up your mind and pray.
